Background: This study was conducted to evaluate whether cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking were associated with metabolic syndrome incancer survivors.
Methods: Using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2013 through 2018, a total of 1,421 cancer survivors (male533, female 888; aged ¡Ã19), were included in this study. To assess the association between smoking, alcohol drinking, and metabolic syndrome, adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multiple logistic regression analysis. The analysis included thefollowing covariates: age, age at cancer diagnosis, marital status, educational status, average monthly income of households, level of stress, walkingexercise, and BMI.
Results: Among male participants, current smokers were 3.04 times more likely to develop metabolic syndrome (OR, 3.04; 95% CI, 1.52?6.07), andcomponents of metabolic syndrome, such as high waist circumference, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypo-high-density lipoprotein (HDL)cholesterolemia were particularly affected (OR 2.71, 95% CI 1.06?6.96; OR 1.95, 95% CI 1.07?3.56; OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.35?4.75, respectively). High riskdrinking increased the risk of hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.06?4.21) and impaired fasting blood glucose (OR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.06?4.95) inmale and hypertension in female (OR, 3.50; 95% CI, 1.08?11.35).
Conclusion: In this study, we found that current smoking was independently related to metabolic syndrome in male cancer survivors, while high riskdrinking increased the risk of components of metabolic syndrome in both male and female cancer survivors.
